Ihiya Biological Reserve
A quiet sanctuary for native plants, wildlife, and clean water conservation
Ihiya Biological Reserve is a hidden gem of protected habitat, located adjacent to the Town of Friday Harbor’s Trout Lake watershed—the primary source of drinking water for the town. A year-round branch of False Bay Creek flows through the preserve, linking it with King Sisters Preserve and Zylstra Lake before eventually reaching the Salish Sea at False Bay Marine Preserve. The protection of Ihiya plays a crucial role in maintaining clean water and healthy ecosystems in this interconnected landscape.
This 33-acre forested reserve provides habitat for a diverse range of native plants, pollinators, birds, and mammals, making it an excellent location for quiet nature walks and wildlife observation. Originally preserved by a neighborhood nonprofit group in 2018, Ihiya was later permanently protected through a conservation easement with the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank. Today, it is jointly stewarded by the Land Bank and the San Juan Preservation Trust, ensuring its long-term conservation.
The preserve was envisioned as a place to connect with nature, reflect, and restore well-being, while also serving as a sanctuary for diverse plant and wildlife communities.
