Some of the best views on the island and a must-visit for history buffs
Located on Located on sheltered Garrison Bay at the northwest end of San Juan Island, English Camp is part of San Juan Island National Historical Park and features a scenic trail network maintained by the National Park Service. This historic site, once occupied by the British during the Pig War (1859–1872), blends history, nature, and breathtaking views.
Trails wind through the open Parade Ground, past historic buildings, and into the surrounding woodlands and shoreline. The shoreline trail connects to Westcott Bay, offering peaceful views and opportunities to spot marine life. Hikers can visit the cemetery, where British soldiers were laid to rest, or take on the moderately challenging climb to Young Hill. At the top, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of Vancouver Island, neighboring islands, and the Olympic Mountains. English Camp also connects to Mitchell Hill and the Roche Harbor Highlands, offering extended hiking opportunities.
Birdwatchers may spot bald eagles, kingfishers, ospreys, and barred owls, along with many smaller songbirds throughout the year.
